Daybreak
Daybreak

Just before dawn and the sun coming on
the campfire is blazing and bright,
so I take from a pot black coffee real hot
to shake off the chill from the night.
The whole front of me is toasted and free
while my backside is frozen and stiff,
but a few sips I know I’ll be ready to go
when that caffeine gives me a lift.
There’s a lot to be said for a good feather bed
and a whole morn to rest your backside,
but that ain’t my way at the first break of day
I’ll be mounted and ready to ride.
I’ve got a whole day of work in my way
and I mean that from sunup til when,
but just for a spell I say, “What the hell,”
and fill up my cup once again.
Now a biscuit or two and breakfast is through
then I’ll blanket and saddle old Son,
take a last minute yawn and then I’ll be gone
for this cowboy a new day’s begun.
